Rosie Lee Updates

London-based design consultancy Rosie Lee dropped us a line to show us some of their new work. First up, a few images from a fun project they did for Millfields Community School. Mark Fleming tells us, “On one stairwell, we decided to install a giant scale dot-to-dot wall with thousands of dots, we used round erasers on pencils dipped in paint and a numbered stamp to number every single dot.”

Secondly, some lovely work for Nike, and the Air Max ‘95. Again, Mark tells us, “When Sergio Lozano originally designed it, the shoe was modeled on the human anatomy. The midsole represents the spine, side panels are muscle fibers and lace loops are the ribs. Nike’s direction for the campaign was ‘Stark Raving Max’, and so we decided to show the shoe in a padded cell, constrained by its laces. We built a corner of a padded cell and worked with Jason Tozer to shoot the key image. post production was carried out in-house to give a clean look to the photography with the luminous colours popping out of the image.”

Infinity Bridge

Surely something as nice as the recently illuminated Infinity Bridge can’t be in Stockton-on-Tees? Designed by Expedition Engineering, the slender bowstring bridge cuts a distinctive silhouette across the River Tees. A 230m-long concrete walkway is supported by a pair of asymmetric steel arches that appear to skip across the river like a pebble skimming water.

Speirs and Major Associates designed the lighting in such a way that the iconic twin arches reflect in the water at night to form the mathematical symbol for infinity (∞) – hence the name. We’re told the unusual bit about the project is the way the lights respond to the movement of pedestrians, of which there is a video here.

Claesson Koivisto Rune

You know, I have no idea which pieces of work to showcase from Claesson Koivisto Rune as there is so much good stuff to look at. There’s a pool of dribble on the desk, I have been salivating that much at their work. From full house design to interiors to product design, the Stockholm-based agency have one of the very best portfolios of work around. Thanks to Mårten, Eero & Ola for the email.

Elise Island // Dan Pearlman

We received the above images from the Elise Island project, the transformation of a children psychiatric clinic, in the German capital. The clinic is called ‘Evangelisches Konigin Elisabeth Krankenhaus’ (KEH) and has created a holistic dreamland for young patients with psychiatric issues. With the :: dan pearlman creative agency cooperation, each room was designed in terms of shape, color, materials, light and air, with the aim of promoting a positive atmosphere of security and shelter, empowering children’s imagination and positive emotions. “The design of a modern therapeutic environment, ‘patient friendly’ is the priority of our concept,” said the director of the KEH, Dr. Rainer Norden, “we expect that a reference project has been created.”

This story is an example that design does have to have sustainability. With actual issues such as economic crisis and climate change, among other problems, it is quite obvious that there is a need for improvement for the society we have created for ourselves.

Neil Watson

Designer, art director, photographer and illustrator Neil Watson has an exceptionally strong portfolio spanning so many different disciplines, it was hard to pick a couple of images. In the end I went with shop installation visuals, as it’s something we don’t feature enough of, but check out his other work, it’s all solid.
